About

We are an award-winning musical theatre company based at the Frome Memorial Theatre. We aim to produce high quality musical theatre for the community by the community bringing a little bit of the West End to the West Country.

We have been established for over 100 years. You can read a little more about our history here. Currently we produce a musical each May which has most recently included Shrek the Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Titanic, Grease, Sister Act and Hairspray. We also produce a highly successful traditional pantomime each Christmas which invariably sells out all 4000+ tickets! The company also offers the opportunity for young people in school years 3 through to 11 within our community to gain experience in musical theatre through our youth group, Spellbound. Their recent shows have included The Little Mermaid, Bugsy Malone, BLITZ!, Seussical, Cats and Joseph. Many of our youth section go on to star in our main shows.

Pantomime

The company performed their first pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk in 1979 and continue to have huge success with family audiences over the festive period. Past productions include Mother Goose, Dick Whittington, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty and many more!

Our pantomimes are always enormous fun to be in with larger than life characters, lots of slapstick humour, bright costumes, big musical numbers and dazzling sets and effects. If you would like more information about our next pantomime, you can contact Producer Jo Plenty via email here.

Spring Show

Frome Musical Theatre Company have been entertaining audiences with musical productions for over 100 years. We perform a full-scale musical each May and have been fortunate to work with a variety of local and professional Directors, Choreographers and Musical Directors.

Over the years we’ve performed well loved shows such as Oliver, My Fair Lady, Annie, Calamity Jane, Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof and Guys and Dolls plus many more. We’ve also been proud to gain rights for more modern productions and try to ensure there’s a variety for our members and audiences alike. We’ve recently performed School of Rock, Shrek the musical, Titanic and Sister Act which have bought in new audiences.

Spellbound

Spellbound was set up in 1989 to offer young people an introduction to musical theatre and provide a pipeline of young people into the main group’s productions. Over the years Spellbound has gone from strength to strength and attracts around 100 youngsters to pre-audition rehearsals. After the audition workshop, the youngsters rehearse weekly until the first week of the Summer holidays when they then participate in an intensive one-week workshop and the show is put together. The company then perform a fully costumed production in the Frome Memorial Theatre.

Spellbound is such important part of the FMTC calendar, not only does it give young people a wonderful opportunity to be involved in musical theatre, but it also encourages the development of life skills such as team building, self-confidence and communication, all essential transferrable skills for their future.
